John Sempeles was born and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a city he held great affection for all of his life. He grew up on Derry Street and attended nearby Melrose Elementary, Edison Junior High School and John Harris High School.

John was the type of guy who became friends with almost everyone he met and remained a friend forever. Beyond the lifelong friendships that began in childhood, many people got to know John during his time as a bass guitar player in popular local bands: The Poor Boys, Soul Impression, and Green Street. He forged many friendships during his college years, as well. Even during the short time he was a substitute teacher in the Harrisburg School District, he made friendships that lasted through his life. John’s personality and natural skill for putting people at ease led him to a long career in marketing. His co-workers and clients quickly became friends and those relationships lasted for decades.

In January of 2019, John was diagnosed with AML – acute myeloid leukemia – and passed away in November of that year. He still looms large in the lives of his family and friends and always will. With The John Sempeles Foundation, we will honor him for the special person he was and keep his memory alive.
